Editorial "Upskill and Ensure your Future" - Hi Everyone, Interestingly I read that companies are making real sacrifices in these uncertain economic times to hold on to their highly valued skilled staff so they are ready to take advantage of the turnaround which will eventually happen. This is because they are aware that the "baby boomers" are getting to retirement age (although many are putting off retirement) and fewer engineering graduates are available these days. Thus one may ask the question "How am I going to retain my job if cuts happen or get another job by making myself more skilled?" Well the simple answer is that you should make yourself more "visible" to your management and the automation community and thus be perceived as critical to the organisation / be seen as a high technical achiever. You can achieve this by taking some or all of the following steps;

(1)  Join local engineering institutes and societies and become active in their organising committees. 

(2) Update your skills in making presentations and speak at seminars and technical evenings, this highlights to your employer that you are a proactive employee who is perceived as an expert in your engineering discipline

(3) Write papers for publication in technical journals, once you start doing this it becomes easier and easier and there is nothing more attractive to a prospective employer to see a range of high quality technical papers at an interview.

(4) Take the step to upskill your expertise by taking on a training course in some of the new technologies such as wireless, fieldbus and other automation developments.

(5) Read one technical article each night, it is a great investment of ten minutes and not such a great impost. ICEweb has numerous technical papers which can increase your knowledge vastly.

(6) Become  a chartered engineer, in counties where it is not mandatory many engineers do not bother with doing this, however it really adds to your employability. 

(7) Improve your personal and interactive skills, be interested in others, become a mentor and make yourself available to assist as a technical expert in any graduate program.

All this involves "work" however just take on some of the above and you may just find that your value increases dramatically and you are seen as a dynamic, highly technical competent individual who is virtually irreplaceable.

Exd Flanged Immersion Heaters with IEC Certification -Over the years it has been difficult to source Exd Certified immersion heaters and often this has led to a certification nightmare for those engineers responsible for the associated equipment packages. At last industry now has a choice when it comes to ensuring that their hazardous area electrical heating requirements are met. Until now the only option has been to import equipment from the UK , or to continue using equipment not fully complying with current flameproof requirements.

Emerson Process Management have introduced the CSI 6500 Machinery Health Monitor, the latest advancement of its Smart Machinery Health Management capabilities. The new CSI 6500 allows users to combine protection modules from the CSI 6000 Machinery Health Monitor with new plug-in prediction modules to create a single rack for a complete online monitoring solution.

Emerson Process Management announces the introduction of an explosion proof / flame proof certified version of its Micro Motion® 7835 custody transfer density meter. This new version includes all the features and class-leading performance of the 7835 density meter, while eliminating the barriers and galvanic isolators required with intrinsically safe instruments. This simplifies installation and significantly reduces project costs. Certified to ATEX II 2 G EEx d IIC T6 and T4 (EN50014 and EN50020 for use in Europe), Emerson's range of Micro Motion liquid density meters is favoured by the oil and gas industries for custody transfer and fiscal applications and widely used for routine control applications in chemical and other processing industries.

Metso Automation has  launched two new products
 - The Neles ValvGuard for foundation fieldbus which is the first TÜV- approved (SIL3) foundation fieldbus (FF) safety valve controller to appear on the market. It combines the benefits of FF communication with the cutting edge technology of the Neles ESD valve range to provide a new level of integrity and safety.
-  The Neles ND9300 Stainless Steel intelligent valve controller.This is a new addition to the field-proven ND9000 family of intelligent valve controllers which is manufactured in an explosion-proof stainless steel housing and developed for use in corrosive environments. It provides an ideal solution when top class performance, comprehensive diagnostics and resistance to tough environmental conditions are required.

Honeywell’s Process Solutions business have announced Advanced Energy Solutions, a suite of process control, monitoring and optimization applications designed specifically for industrial power generation facilities. The Advanced Energy Solutions suite allows industrial power and cogeneration plants to balance electricity generation demands with operational efficiencies and regulatory constraints.  By implementing Advanced Energy Solutions, industrial power generation facilities will benefit from reduced heat rate and power production costs, increased effective boiler operating range, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, optimized production capacity utilization, optimized transient states control, extended production asset life and reduced maintenance.

Standard valve diagnostics on board - SAMSON Series 3730 and 3731 Positioners now include all diagnostic features, which were only available at an extra charge, as standard. The on-board EXPERT+ firmware automatically records relevant data to monitor the valve and positioner. Required key parameters, for example to check the positioner attachment or to count valve cycles, are used to deliver predictive maintenance on the actual state of the valve. The diagnostics include an online hysteresis test that detects any changes in friction in the valve; deviations from the end position are also recorded. A data logger and histograms provide information to retrace the valve's operating conditions and performance. A partial stroke test can also be performed to check the functioning of on/off valves while they are in service. National Instruments have announced the release of the lowest-cost NI CompactRIO programmable automation controller (PAC), which offers engineers and machine builders an ideal solution for advanced control and monitoring applications. The NI cRIO-9073 system has an integrated hardware architecture that combines an embedded real-time processor and a user-programmable FPGA chip within a single chassis. When programming with the LabVIEW 8.6 graphical system design platform and the FPGA within National Instruments PACs such as the cRIO-9073, engineers can quickly implement custom analog and digital control and acquisition loops along with high-speed signal processing algorithms to meet advanced control application challenges easily at a low cost.

KROHNE has launched a new ultrasonic gas flow meters for non-custody transfer applications. This flow meter has been specially developed for applications in the production of natural gas and for gas suppliers’ city gates and transfer stations. Its rugged construction makes it ideally suitable for use in extreme environments, such as offshore platforms.

NPL develop a way to reduce thermocouple uncertainties to less than one degree - One of the ways to make aircraft engines more efficient is to run them at higher temperatures. However to do so safely requires heat-treating the super-alloys of which certain engine components are made to ensure they can withstand hotter conditions. This process involves exposing these components to very specific temperatures in excess of 1300 ºC. Achieving exact temperatures is critical and getting it wrong by more than two degrees in either direction can have major implications. Temperature sensors called thermocouples are used to ensure correct temperatures are achieved in this process. Previously, thermocouples only offered an accuracy of plus or minus three degrees. NPL has solved this problem by developing a way of reducing thermocouple uncertainties to less than one degree. . Until recently there have been no reference points identified at the high temperatures needed for super-alloy heat treatment. Now, using a new type of metal alloy, NPL scientists can identify a new range of reference points for thermocouples at and beyond 1300 ºC. With this added confidence in temperature sensors, component manufacturers will be able to run heat treatments at optimum efficiency leading to minimal waste and ultimately more efficient engines. Emerson Process Management have announced the availability of the Scenario® Virtual Engineer, which combines the power of simulation, virtual technology and its Ovation® expert control system within a single desktop computer. The Scenario Virtual Engineer provides power generators with the necessary tools to easily build, test, verify and download process graphics, control logic and process point databases without impacting plant operation.

Emerson Process Management has introduced a cryogenic seal for its Rosemount® 5300 Series of high performance Guided Wave Radar (GWR) level transmitters. The seal enables accurate, reliable level measurement of condensed and liquefied gasses at very low temperatures (to -196° C) and is ideal for use in process tanks, side chambers, storage tanks and transportation vessels.

Taking a page from the YouTube™ phenomenon, Emerson Process Management have launched its Online Video Center at, delivering concise technology, application, and industry information in the popular 3- to 5-minute YouTube format. "One of the greatest challenges customers face with new technologies is simply keeping up — learning what's new, why it matters, and how they can get the most from their investments," said Bill Morrison, vice president, Marketing Communications for Emerson. "We designed the Video Center to help customers do just that, with the least time required". Each of the site's technology demos is presented from a user's perspective, first describing the problems and then specific features of the technology solution. Interviews and application videos likewise get to the point quickly as industry leaders address trends, discuss application challenges, and present views to help achieve success.

Eclipse Technologies, provider of hazardous area purge systems have announced the release of  new versions of their range of  x-purge and z-purge units. They are designed to achieve hazardous area requirements for general-purpose enclosures and their internal electronics.  The unit does so by continuously purging the enclosure with compressed air or nitrogen.  The positive pressure in the enclosure ensures gas flow from inside to outside and eliminates the possibility of flammable gases re-entering the enclosure.  The user is able to easily view and adjust the gas flow on the front of the unit with the built in flow meter and valve.  If the positive pressure in the enclosure is compromised, the x-purge will shut off the power to the unit.  However, a manual override switch is available for convenience.  The unit is constructed out of stainless steel, which offers the benefit of strength and corrosion resistance.  The x-purge is certified under NFPA Class 1, Division 1 whilst the z-purge is certified under NFPA Class 1, Division 2

UK engineering profession adopts revised standard- The Engineering Council UK have released a new version of its highly commended standard for professional engineering competence, UK-SPEC. The Standard builds on the 2003 document, integrating the three categories of registration, Engineering Technician, Incorporated Engineer and Chartered Engineer, into a format that emphasises the progression possibilities for those entering the profession. It has also provided more detailed guidance on how to satisfy the requirements for registration, and clarified educational benchmarks. The Automation Federation have announced the completion of the Automation Competency Model, a formal federal document defining the skills and competencies needed in the automation field. The Automation Federation worked with industry experts and representatives from the Department of Labor to develop the model over the course of several meetings, including face-to-face working sessions in Research Triangle Park, NC, and Houston, TX. A competency model is a clear description of what a person needs to know and be able to do – the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform well in an occupation. Competency models are developed through research and industry validation, and once completed, are promoted, maintained, and updated. The Automation Competency Model is made up of nine tiers, including personal effectiveness competencies, academic competencies, workplace competencies, industry-wide competencies, automation technical competencies, occupation-specific technical competencies, occupation-specific requirements, and management competencies. The "Valve Selection Handbook" makes a great desk reference for any engineer who is often given the task of sizing, specifying, or troubleshooting valves or rupture discs.  Nearly every type of valve imaginable is discussed in detail.  Special sections on ASME code as well as emerging European standards makes the book very well rounded. 

The International Society of Automation (ISA) recently announced the release of Industrial Pressure, Level, and Density Measurement, Second Edition by Donald R. Gillum. Taking an application-oriented but fundamental approach to measurement, this second edition of Industrial, Pressure, Level and Density Measurement includes a new chapter covering equipment selection, mounting techniques, and specifications. Other new topics and information include: Calibration and re-ranging updates for process calibrators, comparators, and other new test instruments; digital transmitter and communication updates, including HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, wireless transmitters, and multivariable and differential pressure transmitters and applications; added emphasis on non-contact level measurement; advances in hydrostatic tank gauging (HTG); and improved density sensors and new applications.

ISA/O3neida Partnership Publishes New IEC 61499 and Safety Resources – An ongoing publishing partnership between ISA and O3neida has produced two new technical publications on current automation subjects of interest, with a third to be released in January 2009. The first new book, titled “Real-Time Execution for IEC 61499,” is written by Dr. Alois Zoitl of ACIN at the Technical University of Vienna, and gives an analysis of dynamic reconfiguration and the execution behavior of IEC 61499.The second new E-book, “Safety Profiles for Real-Time Ethernet-Based Industrial Automation Networks,” offers a clear introduction on real-time communication systems and functional safety concepts, the methods and techniques necessary to achieve real-time communication and functional safety compliance within industrial production systems according to the IEC 61508. It is written primarily by Dr. Luca Ferrarini from Polimi in Italy.

Building on the Foundation - Jonas Berge - Steady improvements and enhancements over the last decade together with an increasing knowledge base in the process industries have made it far easier to realise the promised benefits of Foundation fieldbus plant network technology.

OPC made easy - EDDL can save numerous man-hours of OPC server configuration and speed up project completion - Jonas Berge - OPC is an o p e n standard me t h o d for transferring data between software applications, used for example to obtain data from devices. Once an OPC server is configured, external software in HMI clients and other users can easily access the wealth of detailed diagnostics and information in hundreds or thousands of intelligent devices around the plant. Configuring OPC clients is easy: just point and click on data in the OPC server. To enable this, the OPC server must first be configured. Electronic device description language (EDDL) makes this easy.

The Fieldbus Foundation have announced that the Wireless Cooperation Team (WCT), one year after its formation, has achieved a number of milestones toward the development of an interface specification and compliance guidelines to integrate a universally accepted wireless solution into the HART™, Foundation fieldbus, PROFIBUS and PROFINET communications networks.  The common interface is intended to make it easier for automation end-users to take advantage of evolving wireless technologies. The Fieldbus Foundation have announced new device development solutions for its Foundation for Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) technology.  The latest SIF release includes the Foundation for SIF final Technical Specification package, SIF Interoperability Test Kit (ITK), and updated DD Library with SIF function blocks.  These solutions support development of interoperable SIF devices for use in a wide range of industrial plant SIF applications. Honeywell have announced the appointment of Norman “Norm” Gilsdorf as president of Honeywell Process Solutions. pH made Easy, Reliable - Jonas Berge - Water and wastewater treatment plants, as well as other industries, use several types of liquid analyzers to monitor quality in terms of many different properties. The pH meter is one of the most important. Analyzers communicate digitally using protocols such as HART®, Foundation® fieldbus, and WirelessHART. Maintaining this mix of analyzers can be a challenge. This is a result of analyzer probes being in direct contact with the process and subject to various different problems depending on the process conditions. The PID Control Loop is one of the fundamental workhorses of the process industries. Day in and day out, millions of PID loops strive to keep processes safe, stable, and profitable. But there is a "secret", known only to control engineers and technicians.Many of these control loops are not properly configured, and the consequences could be devastating. Surprisingly, as many as 75% of control loops actually increase variability. Many control loops simply do not do their job. Setpoints are not followed, valves swing around, creating oscillations, and many loops are disabled by the operator: placed in MANUAL mode.

Yamatake Corporation have announced the release of a new-model pressure transmitter, the AT9000 Advanced Transmitter model GTX (hereinafter the "AT9000 model GTX″), which is designed to improve the safety of plant operations. In recent years, safety instrumented systems designed in accordance with IEC61511 are being used mainly by petroleum, petrochemical and chemical plants as a means of improving the safety of operations. These safety instrumented systems require pressure transmitters designed based on IEC61508. The IEC61508 standard imposes strict requirements concerning various aspects of a product, including its concept design, such as whether or not the product is designed to ensure safety instrumentation, or whether its failure rate is sufficiently low.

The practical and economical barriers to collecting more information from the plant floor and surrounding areas have been dramatically lowered by the emergence of reliable wireless field communications systems. The technology of transmitting information from stand-alone instruments can be put to use today, even in plants with legacy control systems. Information that was previously difficult or impossible to access in the past is now easily collected and transmitted from wireless devices to the plant control system.

Despite this, fewer than 1% of installed measurements in process plants and mills are wireless. Fortunately, real and perceived obstacles to wireless deployment are being overcome with improved technology, most recently the “self organising network”. Other obstacles are not based on technology, but on the lack of security, standards, and consensus on appropriate applications, so are best addressed with a discussion around “best practices”. Users can now consider adding measurements previously impossible to cost-justify, improving safety, reliability, efficiency and environmental compliance.

NIST Collaborates with ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute to Validate ISA100.11a Draft Standard - As part of its ongoing effort to assure the usefulness of the ISA100.11a Industrial Wireless Standard, the ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute (WCI) is collaborating with NIST on a Validation Study to independently perform simulations of network performance characteristics using data from early adopters of the Standard. The Validation Study will analyse performance data and determine if the real world works as simulated. This initiative provides a way of validating certain performance dimensions of the ISA100.11a Standard itself during the early stages of adoption by the industrial automation controls community. In addition, the study supports one of the key goals of the WCI: to provide field tested feedback to the ISA100 Standards Committee for ensuring that the standard meets its intended objectives with satisfactory performance characteristics.

Looking to hike security with RFID devices- There is now a movement underway to improve the privacy and security of RFID chips, computer chips the size of a grain of sand that wirelessly send and receive information over short distances (generally 10 feet or less) via very low-power radio waves. IDC have lined up two national keynote speakers for the event, Mr Roger Royal, who has 40 years experience in the electrical power industry and is one of IDC's most knowledgeable electrical experts.  Roger has travelled all over the world for the last 10 years for IDC to instruct on various electrical topics from his base in the snowy mountains in NSW.  We also welcome Mr Andrew Maunder, who has 25 years experience in the electrical industry and is a certified safety auditor and accredited electrical safety auditor for the Queensland Government in Hazardous Areas and High Voltage Installations.  Both speakers will be presenting a half day workshop on each morning of the two day forum.
