Editorial "Upskill and Ensure your Future" - Hi Everyone, Interestingly I read that companies are making real sacrifices in these uncertain economic times to hold on to their highly valued skilled staff so they are ready to take advantage of the turnaround which will eventually happen. This is because they are aware that the "baby boomers" are getting to retirement age (although many are putting off retirement) and fewer engineering graduates are available these days. Thus one may ask the question "How am I going to retain my job if cuts happen or get another job by making myself more skilled?" Well the simple answer is that you should make yourself more "visible" to your management and the automation community and thus be perceived as critical to the organisation / be seen as a high technical achiever. You can achieve this by taking some or all of the following steps;
(1) Join local engineering institutes and societies and become active in their organising committees.
(2) Update your skills in making presentations and speak at seminars and technical evenings, this highlights to your employer that you are a proactive employee who is perceived as an expert in your engineering discipline
(3) Write papers for publication in technical journals, once you start doing this it becomes easier and easier and there is nothing more attractive to a prospective employer to see a range of high quality technical papers at an interview.
(4) Take the step to upskill your expertise by taking on a training course in some of the new technologies such as wireless, fieldbus and other automation developments.
(5) Read one technical article each night, it is a great investment of ten minutes and not such a great impost. ICEweb has numerous technical papers which can increase your knowledge vastly.
(6) Become a chartered engineer, in counties where it is not mandatory many engineers do not bother with doing this, however it really adds to your employability.
(7) Improve your personal and interactive skills, be interested in others, become a mentor and make yourself available to assist as a technical expert in any graduate program.
All this involves "work" however just take on some of the above and you may just find that your value increases dramatically and you are seen as a dynamic, highly technical competent individual who is virtually irreplaceable.

Standard valve diagnostics on board - SAMSON Series 3730 and 3731 Positioners now include all diagnostic features, which were only available at an extra charge, as standard. The on-board EXPERT+ firmware automatically records relevant data to monitor the valve and positioner. Required key parameters, for example to check the positioner attachment or to count valve cycles, are used to deliver predictive maintenance on the actual state of the valve. The diagnostics include an online hysteresis test that detects any changes in friction in the valve; deviations from the end position are also recorded. A data logger and histograms provide information to retrace the valve's operating conditions and performance. A partial stroke test can also be performed to check the functioning of on/off valves while they are in service. This test is particularly important for valves which remain in one position for a long time. For more information contact our sponsor Samson Controls.

NPL develop a way to reduce thermocouple uncertainties to less than one degree - One of the ways to make aircraft engines more efficient is to run them at higher temperatures. However to do so safely requires heat-treating the super-alloys of which certain engine components are made to ensure they can withstand hotter conditions. This process involves exposing these components to very specific temperatures in excess of 1300 ºC. Achieving exact temperatures is critical and getting it wrong by more than two degrees in either direction can have major implications. Temperature sensors called thermocouples are used to ensure correct temperatures are achieved in this process. Previously, thermocouples only offered an accuracy of plus or minus three degrees. NPL has solved this problem by developing a way of reducing thermocouple uncertainties to less than one degree. . Until recently there have been no reference points identified at the high temperatures needed for super-alloy heat treatment. Now, using a new type of metal alloy, NPL scientists can identify a new range of reference points for thermocouples at and beyond 1300 ºC. With this added confidence in temperature sensors, component manufacturers will be able to run heat treatments at optimum efficiency leading to minimal waste and ultimately more efficient engines. Read more about NPL’s Thermocouples research.

Eclipse Technologies, provider of hazardous area purge systems have announced the release of new versions of their range of x-purge and z-purge units. They are designed to achieve hazardous area requirements for general-purpose enclosures and their internal electronics. The unit does so by continuously purging the enclosure with compressed air or nitrogen. The positive pressure in the enclosure ensures gas flow from inside to outside and eliminates the possibility of flammable gases re-entering the enclosure. The user is able to easily view and adjust the gas flow on the front of the unit with the built in flow meter and valve. If the positive pressure in the enclosure is compromised, the x-purge will shut off the power to the unit. However, a manual override switch is available for convenience. The unit is constructed out of stainless steel, which offers the benefit of strength and corrosion resistance. The x-purge is certified under NFPA Class 1, Division 1 whilst the z-purge is certified under NFPA Class 1, Division 2

Analysers - ICEwebs Analyser pages cover many types of analysers plus their associated sample systems.
pH made Easy, Reliable - Jonas Berge - Water and wastewater treatment plants, as well as other industries, use several types of liquid analyzers to monitor quality in terms of many different properties. The pH meter is one of the most important. Analyzers communicate digitally using protocols such as HART®, Foundation® fieldbus, and WirelessHART. Maintaining this mix of analyzers can be a challenge. This is a result of analyzer probes being in direct contact with the process and subject to various different problems depending on the process conditions. However, modern pH analyzers diagnose themselves, the glass, and reference electrodes in the sensor, as well as the temperature sensor. This allows for more effective maintenance schemes that help keep the loop and plant running with minimum downtime. Recent enhancements to the EDDL (Electronic Device Description Language) IEC 61804-3 standards have helped improve calibration and advanced diagnosis of high-end pH analysers.

The PID Control Loop is one of the fundamental workhorses of the process industries. Day in and day out, millions of PID loops strive to keep processes safe, stable, and profitable. But there is a "secret", known only to control engineers and technicians. Many of these control loops are not properly configured, and the consequences could be devastating. Surprisingly, as many as 75% of control loops actually increase variability. Many control loops simply do not do their job. Setpoints are not followed, valves swing around, creating oscillations, and many loops are disabled by the operator: placed in MANUAL mode.
Studies of control loops in the process industries give some insight into the root cause of these issues. For example:
A newly published white paper "The Six Most Common PID Configuration Errors: How to Find and Fix Them" from ExperTune identifies the most common PID configuration issues, and provides techniques to help plant-based personnel find and fix these issues.

Accurate Flow Measurement Improves Profit - Two-wire Coriolis Flowmeter for Loop Powered Applications- Rough Economic Seas – The current economic climate means that many managers are taking a keen interest in the selection of their flow-measuring devices. Today’s decision makers understand the benefits of different flow technologies and accept that when migrating to higher performing technologies, there may be cost implications resulting from, for example, increased wiring and associated installation costs. In a new installation, these extra costs can usually be minimized through good engineering practices.
Krohne has developed the Altosonic V12 - an ultrasonic gas flowmeter for custody transfer applications. The Altosonic V12 has 12 measurement chords, two of which are dedicated solely to diagnostic functions, so once commissioned, the meter continuously checks the operating status. The positioning of the chords in five horizontal parallel planes compensates for swirl and therefore provides reliable measurement even with distorted flow profiles.

High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems - (HIPPS)
ICEweb's HIPPS page has been extensively upgraded with more links to great technical papers including the following;
What is HIPPS? - This useful paper from Mokveld describes the technology well.
Optimizing Production Rates and Reducing Life-Cycle Cost for High-Pressure Fields - S. Patni - A key enabling technology for developing high pressure fields is a high integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS). The HIPPS isolates the lower pressure rated flowlines and riser from an overpressure. Thus HIPPS would allow a high-pressure field to tie-in to existing lower pressure rated infrastructure, a capability that will facilitate the development of high-pressure fields. Thanks to otcnet.orgHIPPS protects subsea production in HP/HT conditions - Lars Bak - Lilleaker Consulting AS - Roald Sirevaag and Halvor Stokke -The subsea production system for the high pressure/high temperature (HP/HT) Kristin field was developed to accommodate its shut-in wellhead pressure of 740 bar (74 MPa) and flowing temperature of 157° C (315° F). This required protecting the flowlines and risers from overpressure. The Kristin field began production in Nov. 2005, and in Aug. 2006, five of six subsea high integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS) were working. During the initial year of operation, the Kristin subsea HIPPS proved reliable, operations friendly, and efficient, causing no unplanned production loss. This performance can be attributed to the extensive qualification process, the design effort, and quality control throughout development. Thanks to offshore-mag.com
Subsea HIPPS offers high-pressure field development option - Sandeep Patni and Janardhan Davalath - A major challenge in developing a deepwater project is recovering reserves at a reasonable capex investment for flowline and riser installation. A high-integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS) is a step toward improving recoverability. HIPPS provides a pressure break between subsea systems that are rated to full shut-in pressure and the flowline and riser, rated to a lower pressure. Thanks to offshore-mag.com
Considerations in designing HIPPS - Willem-Jan Nuis / Rens Wolters - Due to environmental constraints and cost saving, HIPPS has gained popularity over the last years as the last line of defence, replacing pressure safety valves (PSV), blow down and flare systems. Although HIPPS is applied for more than a quarter of a century, design and implementation of HIPPS is still not as obvious as one might expect. The main reason for this is the way the IEC 61508 and the more recently introduced IEC 61511 standards are written. The oil and gas industry for years has been accustomed to work with prescriptive standards. Thanks to the safety users group.
Level - Technical Information covering a wide range of level subjects including General Theory, Capacitance, Displacer, Float/Magnetic, Radar, Ultrasonic, Boiler Level and more!
Pressure - Covers General Theory, Technical Papers, Transmitters, Regulators, Safety Tips, Blockage Tool and more Pressure Related Technologies.

These transmitters specialise in areas such as DP Flow, Mass Flow, Safety Certified, and Diagnostics. The value of specialised transmitters has been demonstrated to increase quality, throughput, or uptime. Any added complexity of maintaining these transmitters through their life cycle, installation, start-up, routine maintenance or emergency maintenance could be a challenge to plants.
Pressure Relief Valves - A very comprehensive resource covering Technical Papers, Technical Manuals, Engineering Handbook, Calculations, Sizing, Selection and Relief Design.
Rupture Discs - Specifications, Standards, Technical Papers and Articles.

page must be your first choice when looking for quality technical information.
Temperature Transmitters Warming Up to EDDL - Jonas Berge - Enhancements to the EDDL IEC 61804-3 standards have improved advanced setup and diagnosis of high-end temperature transmitters. Temperature transmitters communicate digitally using protocols such as HART, Foundation fieldbus, and WirelessHART. Supporting this mix of transmitters can be a challenge. However, modern temperature transmitters diagnose themselves, the sensor wiring, and the temperature element. This allows for more effective maintenance schemes that help keep the loop and plant running with minimum downtime.
Temperature Regulators - The characteristic feature of self-operated temperature regulators is their compact design, including a sensor, a valve and a capillary tube. Their simple operating principle is based on fundamental mechanical, physical and thermodynamic laws. Thanks to our valued sponsor Samson Controls.

The result of their close collaboration is a one-stop-shop approach to HIPPS - being able to purchase every element of a HIPPS solution from a single source.
Enhanced Reliability for Final Elements - Process valves, sometimes also addressed as final elements are in many cases the most decisive factor when it comes to calculating the SIL level for a safety instrumented function (SIF). Testing procedures like partial stroke testing can provide enhanced diagnostic coverage and therefore help to get improved reliability data for the total loop. Verification of this 'diagnostic data' and proper integration of these procedures into the safety instrumented system (SIS) and basic process control system (BPCS) environment at the same time poses a challenge. New developments on actors and relevant approvals are presented as well as instrumentation with new functionality to support diagnostic coverage, different topologies for connection to SIS and BPCS are discussed. Thanks to our sponsor Samson Controls.
The following articles and news are available thanks to our valued sponsor Pilz Australia, please note ICEweb's Manufacturing and Automation Safety page has been extensively reworked with many new links.
Programmable Safety and Control Systems for Use in Burner Control - Adam Hallinan -There are many BMS systems running today which do not comply with current standards. They are either using non approved standard PLC’s or antiquated relay based control systems. Not only is the potential failure to danger a risk to man and machinery but even non dangerous sporadic failures can be difficult to fault find and lead to costly down time. Programmable safety and control systems (PSS) suitable for use in BMS have been available for well over 10 years now. These controllers can identify any dangerous failures before they create a hazardous situation, and also provide a level of diagnostics to minimise downtimes. By taking the I/O into the field, large distributed applications with many burners can be accommodated economically with minimum install time, and also safely.
Safe firing - Optimised Hardware and Software for Burner Management - Today’s modern burner controls for commercial and industrial gas and oil firing systems do more than just start the burner safely. They monitor and control all functions from ignition of the ignition burner through to the operating position of the main burner – all on the basis of the standards EN 298 and EN 230.
Pilz has released version 6.0.0 of its Configurator tool for the PNOZmulti modular safety controller, with numerous enhancements and new features. Read more here.

Yamatake Corporation have announced the release of a new-model pressure transmitter, the AT9000 Advanced Transmitter model GTX (hereinafter the "AT9000 model GTX″), which is designed to improve the safety of plant operations. In recent years, safety instrumented systems designed in accordance with IEC61511 are being used mainly by petroleum, petrochemical and chemical plants as a means of improving the safety of operations. These safety instrumented systems require pressure transmitters designed based on IEC61508. The IEC61508 standard imposes strict requirements concerning various aspects of a product, including its concept design, such as whether or not the product is designed to ensure safety instrumentation, or whether its failure rate is sufficiently low.
SIL 3 Solutions - Safety Instrumented Systems Evolve Towards Greater Flexibility as Process Industries Address Increasing Competition...."For full plant-wide safety in an oil refinery or chemical plant, a triplicated system may make sense; but for smaller applications with only a hundred I/Os, these large monolithic systems simply aren’t cost effective," says Paul Gruhn, P.E., CFSE, training manager at ICS Triplex, a Rockwell Automation Company. Because of the costs, customers are looking for cost effectiveness through scalability—and that’s where new technologies are coming into play.
STAHL has extended its ISpac 9182 range of Temperature Transmitters by adding a new model suitable for use in safety-related process automation applications according to IEC EN 61508 / 61511. The isolator meets SIL 2 requirements.

Wireless Widens the View - Jonas Berge - A wider window into the plant is now possible as previously "difficult to access" field data becomes easier to collect and transmit with the latest wireless technology. The practical and economical barriers to collecting more information from the plant floor and surrounding areas have been dramatically lowered by the emergence of reliable wireless field communications systems. The technology of transmitting information from stand-alone instruments can be put to use today, even in plants with legacy control systems. Information that was previously difficult or impossible to access in the past is now easily collected and transmitted from wireless devices to the plant control system.
Wireless Technology & Best Practices to Reduce Project Costs - Mark Menezes - Benefits of wireless seem obvious – “no wires”. Despite this, fewer than 1% of installed measurements in process plants and mills are wireless. Fortunately, real and perceived obstacles to wireless deployment are being overcome with improved technology, most recently the “self organising network”. Other obstacles are not based on technology, but on the lack of security, standards, and consensus on appropriate applications, so are best addressed with a discussion around “best practices”. Users can now consider adding measurements previously impossible to cost-justify, improving safety, reliability, efficiency and environmental compliance.
Asset Management Leverages Smart Wireless Devices - Laura Briggs/Joseph Citrano III - Smart Wireless Devices generate diagnostics that extend the value of asset management systems.
ICEweb's comprehensive wireless page has many links to a wide range of excellent papers on wireless.
NIST Collaborates with ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute to Validate ISA100.11a Draft Standard - As part of its ongoing effort to assure the usefulness of the ISA100.11a Industrial Wireless Standard, the ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute (WCI) is collaborating with NIST on a Validation Study to independently perform simulations of network performance characteristics using data from early adopters of the Standard. The Validation Study will analyse performance data and determine if the real world works as simulated. This initiative provides a way of validating certain performance dimensions of the ISA100.11a Standard itself during the early stages of adoption by the industrial automation controls community. In addition, the study supports one of the key goals of the WCI: to provide field tested feedback to the ISA100 Standards Committee for ensuring that the standard meets its intended objectives with satisfactory performance characteristics.
Looking to hike security with RFID devices- There is now a movement underway to improve the privacy and security of RFID chips, computer chips the size of a grain of sand that wirelessly send and receive information over short distances (generally 10 feet or less) via very low-power radio waves. Thanks to the ISA and InTech.
The Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports on how wireless technology incorporated into 'Smart' buildings, structures may save billions.
